The standard format for photos. It shrinks files by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which makes it compact but slightly lossy every time it is saved.

03FAQ

JPG to AVIF Questions

Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your JPG files never leave your device. Nothing is stored, and the page keeps working even on a slow connection.

Will converting JPG to AVIF reduce quality?

AVIF is a lossy format, so a little detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default quality of 85 the difference is very hard to see. Move the quality slider up if you need the result to be closer to the original.

Why does AVIF take longer?

AVIF compresses very efficiently, which takes more processing. Small images convert in a second or two; very large photos can take 10–20 seconds each on a typical laptop.

Will the AVIF file be bigger or smaller?

Usually smaller. AVIF is one of the most efficient formats available; the exact saving depends on the image and the quality you choose.

Is the JPG to AVIF converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Convert up to 50 files per batch, as many times as you like.
