AVIF vs JPG
.avif
AVIF
A newer format based on the AV1 video codec. It gives some of the smallest files available at a given quality and supports transparency, HDR and wide colour.
.jpg .jpeg .jfif
JPG
The standard format for photos. It shrinks files by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which makes it compact but slightly lossy every time it is saved.

AVIF to JPG Questions
Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your AVIF files never leave your device. Nothing is stored, and the page keeps working even on a slow connection.
Will converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so a little detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default quality of 85 the difference is very hard to see. Move the quality slider up if you need the result to be closer to the original.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent parts of your AVIF are filled with a background colour. White is the default; you can switch to black or pick any colour before converting.
Will the JPG file be bigger or smaller?
It depends on the image. The converter shows the original and new size for every file, so you can compare before downloading.
Is the AVIF to JPG converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Convert up to 50 files per batch, as many times as you like.
