GIF vs JPG

.gif

GIF

One of the oldest web formats, best known for short animations. It is limited to 256 colours and on/off transparency, so photos tend to look banded.

.jpg .jpeg .jfif

JPG

The standard format for photos. It shrinks files by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which makes it compact but slightly lossy every time it is saved.

03FAQ

GIF to JPG Questions

Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your GIF files never leave your device. Nothing is stored, and the page keeps working even on a slow connection.

Will converting GIF to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so a little detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default quality of 85 the difference is very hard to see. Move the quality slider up if you need the result to be closer to the original.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent parts of your GIF are filled with a background colour. White is the default; you can switch to black or pick any colour before converting.

What about animated GIF files?

Only the first frame is converted, producing a still JPG. Animation isn’t carried over in this version.

Will the JPG file be bigger or smaller?

Usually much smaller, especially for photos. Graphics with flat colours and text may show slight artefacts, so keep quality high for those.

Is the GIF to JPG converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Convert up to 50 files per batch, as many times as you like.
