03FAQ

PNG to ICO Questions

How do I add the icon to my website?

Name the file favicon.ico, put it in the root of your site, and optionally add <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any"> to your page head.

Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your PNG files never leave your device. Nothing is stored, and the page keeps working even on a slow connection.

Will converting PNG to ICO reduce quality?

Icons are small by nature, so your image is scaled down to each icon size (up to 256 × 256). For the sharpest result, start from a square image at least 256 pixels wide; the smaller sizes use high-quality downscaling.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. ICO supports full transparency, so soft edges, shadows and see-through areas come through intact.

Which icon sizes should I include?

16 and 32 pixels are used by browser tabs, 48 by Windows Explorer and 256 by high-resolution displays. The default set covers all of them; extra sizes only add a few kilobytes.

Will the ICO file be bigger or smaller?

Icon files are small, usually under 100 KB, depending on which sizes you include.

Is the PNG to ICO converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Convert up to 50 files per batch, as many times as you like.
